Steam locomotive C 5/6 No 2965 Elephant Swiss Federal Railways CFF 1916Locomotives with ten coupled wheels became more widely adopted after it proved possible to build them so that the outer coupled axles could move laterally on curves. The first locomotive with this arrangement had been built in Austria in 1900. To cope with the higher power needed, the steam was superheated to 350°C. The locomotive was of the Compound design, with the steam being used twice, first in the twin high-pressure and then in the low-pressure cylinders.

The last big Swiss steam locomotive
Across the St. Gotthard with the help of Elephants
In 1913, the largest steam locomotives ever built in Switzerland were put into service. Before this, the private Gotthard Railway had needed to use two or three steam locomotives per train on the upward journey to handle the growing freight and passenger traffic. The use of larger and more powerful locomotives only became possible after the Gotthard Railway was nationalised in 1909, and the Swiss Federal Railways CFF had modified the operating arrangements by installing larger-diameter turntables. Prior to the 1916 decision to electrify the route, SLM built 30 of these locomotives. Because of the early electrification of the Swiss railways, no larger steam locomotives were subsequently ordered.
